SUCH a busy last few days ... so different from my normal run of the mill days where I just sit around on our love seat watching television with my feet propped in the air all day eating expensive chocolates fed to me by our pet monkey Bong Bong. :-(
But I finally have a minute to take a deep breath this morning and I'd like to address the issue of police scanners and average nosey people like me ... and even lots nosier people with peanuts for brains ... and social media ... AND the incident in Fort Massac last Friday night involving the possible assault of a young women out for a jog or walk in the park.
We have a lot to cover and time is ticking away
so let's get TO it and let's start with police scanners and why I love them and why I wouldn't take a farm in Texas for ours.
Let me just tell you briefly that when we first married ... for years Geezer wouldn't let me have a police scanner. He said scanners were for police to communicate different problems back and forth to each other and it was nobody's business what they were doing. And that they needed to be left alone to do their own jobs just like every other employee in every other scenario.
He changed his mind when my own mom heard something on her police scanner and told me and that one little incident possibly save the life of Kim, Brian and me. So within 2 or 3 days of that incident, Geezer had bought me a police scanner and we've never been without one since and Kim was about 2 years old at that time. And the story behind that scary incident can be found in the blog Kim is going to link to the bottom of this one.
But I have NEVER EVER chased a police car or ambulance to see where they are going! I HAVE NEVER EVER heard something on the scanner and jumped in the car and took off to go get my own bird's eye view of what was happening.
"I" believe that police scanners in our homes are a wonderful thing and every one should have them and I believe all law enforcement should use them to inform people of foot pursuits in their neighborhoods and this and that.
AND I believe anyone following an ambulance or police car just to see where they are going should have a big fat fine slapped on them and if it can't be paid with 24 hours ... the police should double the fine. THAT would stop THAT really quick!
Let me say real quick ... I ABSOLUTELY LOVE our sheriff and Chief of Police. I don't think this city or county has ever been in better hands. DID YOU KNOW ... our sheriff is a lunch buddy to one of the kids at school. And he started out with one lunch buddy, but took him lunch one day from Sonic or somewhere and NOW Sheriff Ted has about EIGHT lunch buddies :8) Yup...sure nuff ... heard that on Coffee Break on WMOK. And he's busted more druggies in his short time as our sheriff than I think has been busted in all the other years put together. And our Chief of Police is just as good! WE REALLY HAVE 2 WINNERS HERE and with a little help from informers and this or that ... they CAN turn Metropolis back around to the quaint and safe little mom and pop town we were decades ago.
But this is to all law enforcement: DO NOT blame US for wanting to know what's going on in our own little neighborhoods. If you had a very bad criminal on the loose that was known to be in the neighborhood of YOUR house and your wife and kids were home alone ... wouldn't you call home and tell them to lock their doors and wouldn't you tell your wife not to let the kids outside until this was over?
Well most of us are not thick enough with you guys ... that you're going to call us personally and tell us something like this ... SO we NEED our scanners to stay informed.
It's only common sense that we would want to know if something bad is going on near us and we or our family could be in possible danger. And YOU guys would be fools NOT to call your family or have someone at your office do so ... if such a thing was going on in your neighborhood. WE are not all married to law officers or people that work in your offices and OUR only way of knowing what's going on in OUR neighborhoods is by keeping our scanners on.
NOW ... I'm going way too long with this so let me cut right to the incident last Friday night. The report below was released by the Metropolis Police Department on Facebook this week ... so you need to read that real quick so you know exactly what was reported and then we'll go on ...
Here we go ...

As I read that ... my heart just sank as I read the line "Social media has been full of false rumors and stories this weekend." And do you know why that upset me? Be CAUSE "I" reported what "I" had heard on the scanner on my facebook page and being as insecure as I am ... I thought they were pointing their finger right at ME.
I'm not sure if I was the one they were pointing a finger at or not for speaking out on facebook, but what I reported on my page was just exactly ... word for word ... what "I" heard on the scanner on Friday night as this was all unfolding.
I WAS SHOCKED BEYOND WORDS that this incident was being reported not only in Fort Massac ... but I was even shocked it was being reported in my COUNTY! I told what "I" had heard because I have many friends that walk and jog the bicycle trail and that road back in Fort Massac and since the whole incident was being kept so hush hush ... I wanted the story out there as best I could tell it with the absolute facts that I had heard on the scanner with my own ears.
Now I can't even remember ... but SURELY I said "this is what had been reported" because I'm about as suspicious as the next person and Geezer and I were already saying "That doesn't sound like Massac County ... wonder if it was a drug deal gone back ... there has to be more to this story."
We were actually saying that as this was unfolding.
HOWEVER ... the fact of the matter WAS ... for whatever reason ... a young woman was found in pretty bad shape deep IN Fort Massac and was saying she had been attacked so at least that much ... needed to be known. OR AS A MOM AND GRANDMA of grown young women who could possibly GO walking or jogging ... "I" felt it was important that the story be out there just as a precaution...
I told about the white impala because it was mentioned on the scanner before the ambulance ever arrived to take the young woman to the hospital. They were looking for it on all roads in Fort Massac and even Belgrade Road ... Now I'm not a rocket scientist ... but I don't need to BE a rocket scientist to put 2 and 2 together and know there was some suspicion about a white impala possibly being connected to this incident. THAT was just something we all needed to know and be on the look out for. When I posted ... I didn't say "more than one person was involved". And I didn't say "there have been other happenings just like this."
MAYBE this white impala was out on a leisurely Friday evening drive deep in the woods of Fort Massac and maybe who ever was driving it just took a long scenic route on the way home from bible study at the church he graces the door of every time it's open. AND IF THAT'S THE CASE ... he wouldn't mind me telling my story. HOWEVER ... even people along Belgrade road were being asked if they had seen the white car go by and one man had.
When this was happening on Friday night and Geezer and I were listening to the scanner ... he said "I've seen a white Impala that is rigged up to look like an unmarked police car and I thought "How clever that they used an older car for an unmarked car" As I was telling others about the white Impala ... THEY had seen it TOO. And one person that is actually in a position to know SAID .. 'It's been reported that the man in the white Impala has actually tried to pull a few women over"
SO shouldn't we ALL be aware that a white Impala may try to pull over our daughters or grand daughters and don't we want to warn then of this very thing ... that it may be a rumor but take no chances?
I LOVE our law enforcement. AND I KNOW that sometimes they keep things hush hush for a reason. But sometimes there are just little details that we all need to be aware of.
I would never ever tell anything that I thought would jeopardize anything ... and I wasn't born under a rock. I act goofy ON PURPOSE! :-) I DO have and use good common sense when it's needed.
Years ago we had a little light blue and silver Bronco. I absolutely loved that Bronco. You rarely ever saw one like it. But then ... a well known drug dealer in Massac County bought an older used one and was using it to do his doings. And I started having so many scary incidents in that Bronco that we finally had to get rid of it.
Scary looking people were always trying to honk me over and I was followed a few times and even had to run in Pat's market in Brookport one day to get away from a man that was trying to run me off the road and the police were called. It was that week that we learned of the drug dealer with the Bronco like ours and our Bronco was replaced quicker than a spoonful of ice cream would melt on a hot sidewalk on a hot July afternoon.
Yup I'm nosey! And I LOVE my police scanner... and recommend that everyone have one...
Peace and love ... Let's all go out there and make this one of the best days we've ever had ...

Woman claims to have been robbed and attacked at Ft Massac State Park
Metropolis, IL – A 24 year old woman claims that she was robbed of money and then struck and her neck cut near her car in Ft Massac State Park on Friday, August 8, 2014. At approximately 7:53 pm, Metropolis dispatch received a 911 call stating a woman had been beaten and cut. Police and Medical Personnel responded to the area. The victim stated she was getting out of her vehicle when approached by a male white with short brown hair and a lanky build. The offender asked for gas money. The victim stated she gave him some money at which time he attacked her and took the rest of her money. The victim was transported to Baptist Hospital for treatment. Her injuries were minor and not considered life threatening. The investigation is revealing some inconsistencies in her statement and is ongoing.
Chief Masse wants to assure the public that there is not a crime wave or rash of attacks going on in the parks. Social media has been full of false rumors and stories this weekend. To help alleviate the fears, Metropolis and the IL Department of Conservation Police will step up patrols in the park.
The preceding information pertains to arrests made by the Metropolis Police Department. These arrests are made on the basis of probable cause and all arrestees are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
