It runs 690 miles this year and starts in Alabama ... but we started out our first year in Chattanooga. PERFECT place to start because the first big yard sale community we came to was Signal Mountain ... a little storybook village just on the outskirts of Chattanooga.
Now you will read many places that
Geezer and I have been to this yard sale 2 times and my goodness what a time we had. SO many laughs and super wonderful memories. We have no plans to go this year but hopefully very soon we'll get on the road for a few days.
The old indian chief in the photo was bought along the route of the World's Longest Yard Sale in 2008, I believe it was. Geezer saw him sitting in a rocking chair on the side of the road along that route and he said "I've gotta pull in and see what they want for that old guy" SO we did and after a little negotiating ... we left with him strapped in with the seat belt in the back seat of our squad car. He's about 51/2 feet tall.
The squaw ... who is 5 feet tall ... I bought from a mannequin maker in Texas after Geezer kept saying he thought the old chief looked lonely in the toy box. So about 2 months before his birthday in 2009 I got online and searched for mannequin makers that would do special orders. I found one after days of searching and he had me send him photo's of our chief with his measurements (head, arms, height, etc)...and he made that squaw for me to give to Geezer for a little over $200. I WAS THRILLED. AND so was the mannequin maker. He said "WHAT a thoughtful idea!" :-) He even sent me the clothing and the whole shebang.
We just had so much fun along the world's longest year sale and I was hired to write a story about it for one of the official world's longest yard sale websites....I'll see if I can find that link and add it here...It ended up being a really good story even if I do say so myself ... VERY informative and kind of funny here and there when telling of our mishaps.
People ask us all the time if it was expensive stuff along the route. Weeeeeelll, in the fields it was mainly professional antique vendors and most of it was sky high...but if you follow the signs and take the little side roads and park at the edge of the little towns and just walk through the hundreds of personal yard sales in YARDS ... IT IS HEAVENLY. Our favorite little town was Dunlap and that's where we also had the world's best barbecue :-)
There's lots to see and read on this subject ... right here this morning ... so I'm just going to leave you with the links so you can get with it.
This first link is the one I was hired to write for one of the Yard Sale Websites and they just raved about it. I just kept a notebook and pen with me at all times so I could jot down little things that happened that I may have forgotten other wise. Hope you have time to read it...
